Totally Inspiring Room

The living room of John Derian’s new apartment. I love the rustic but clean style!

This lovely living room is in the apartment of decoupage guru, John Derian, and is situated in a building which has been standing since the mid 1800’s. Apparently Derian is drawn to all things beautifully old and decrepit, so much so that he was reluctant to change much when he bought this apartment. Still, modern building codes required some updates so he undertook the task with the help of a sympathetic contractor. I think the final result turned out wonderfully!

The updated bedroom.

The bathroom was completely overhauled but I think that the spirit of the original style shows in its design.

You can read the New York Times Magazine article on the renovation and see more before and after pictures. I love how serene and livable the whole project looks.

In the Green Room…

I’m posting late today, I know. I just started a new job so I’ve been a little preoccupied! Still, that’s no reason to skip this Monday’s color post… and here it is – all things green. Enjoy!

The first time I saw this kitchen was in Elle Decoration UK. I loved the open shelving a the pretty green mosaic tiles.

Honestly, my favorite thing about this room is the coffee table but I also love all the different shades of green an yellow working in harmony.

Tobias Fairley also mixes greens here in this living room… the blue and white accents really make it pop.

Definitely green… but subtly so.

Making a focal point out of a green table is genius.

A solid and massive emerald green coffee table makes this room full of neutrals interesting.

Bathrooms are private rooms used only by the owner’s of a given house. So how often do most people think about the decoration and ambience of these little private worlds?

I think about it frequently… I’m semi-obsessed with classic, clean looking bathrooms with elegant touches: simple gilt framed mirrors, a marble bust of a French aristocrat, or wallpaper reminiscent of a winter forest.

White in the bathroom, for me, is synonymous with cleanliness. I love a bath fitted out in classic white with touches of black, grey, and metal.

But black also has its appeal as well. With an all black ground, every other color, print, or pattern just pops! It seems a great way to make the function of the room recede and to bring the color and texture of your materials to the forefront.

Above are a few favorites that I’ve gathered recently.  What are your favorite color schemes for a bath?
