Totally Inspiring Room

image
From House and Home via Poppytalk

This scan is from the September 2011 issue of House & Home magazine (still not sure when or why the ‘Canadian’ part of the title went missing… but I digress). It’s from a weekend decorating article that gives some sweet ideas for taking your interiors up a notch with DIY projects.

The lovely bedroom above is the final page of the feature. The editors suggest “imperfect paint”. I just love the colors and textures. God help me if I’m ever able to find out who makes the fabric/duvet cover on the bed. Those painterly stripes are gorgeous. I really like the lamp to the left of the bed as well (another project from the article) and the Farrow & Ball paint in ‘Setting Plaster’. Plus, who wouldn’t want an ebonized book case with antique gilt edging and loads of vintages books on it as a headboard?

Happy Tuesday! I hope this inspires you as much as it did me!

Etsy Shop: Frieda Sophie

image

I’m not quite sure how I found this… but during one of my many Etsy sessions I happened upon Freida Sophie. The shop has a beautiful collection of semi precious gemstones set into gold with a modern, feminine sensibility.

I love the bold chunks of stone wrapped in fine organic bezels and the color combinations are gorgeous! I’ve seen two of my favorites in abundance: chrysoprase and chalcedony in several different colors.

Elegant Nursery

image

This beautiful, elegant nursery was submitted by a reader to the Elements of Style blog… what a sensational room! I am a huge fan of sophisticated kids rooms and this nursery is one of the best examples I’ve seen. In the post the homeowner shares her inspiration and sources. Read more at Elements of Style.

Before & After: Storage Box

IKEA hacking. Who hasn’t heard of it? Sometimes the “hacks” are cringe inducing and sometimes they are brilliant. I’m lumping this one in the brilliant category.

After!

Emily from Life On The V Side blog posted this cool work around for IKEA’s Apa storage box. All it took was the right inspiration, some wood stain, linen remnants, and brass tacks. No really, brass tacks! Check out the whole process on Emily’s post. Pretty cool, huh?

Before & After: Mid-Century Dresser

Steph at Birdhouse did a fabulous DIY on a inexpensive, non-designer mid century modern dresser. She took it from shabby and worn to a blingy, mod superstar. Here’s how it started out:

After!

I love how she removed the fussy, dated gullwing pulls, went for the currently trés popular two tone look, and gave the front some kerpow with those classy ring pulls. All in all a great DIY makeover by Steph! Check out the post on her blog, Birdhouse,  for a complete breakdown of how she did it… in case you want to try it yourself.

Have a great Saturday!

The Black Door

I love black doors! The first time I realized I was leaning towards this was when I saw an article in Elle Decoration about an art collector and her husband who’d redone the interior of an old Victorian in a completely modern style. The floors, trim, and doors were a deep, glossy black and the walls were a super bright white. The whole place was flooded with light and the colorful art stood out beautifully. Ever since then I’ve been a fan of the look.

Nate Berkus did the doors of an apartment of his  featured in O a couple of years back a blue so dark that in some photos it read as black.

The entry of designer Michael Bargo’s apartment from the last issue of Domino Magazine.

But my favorite of all time was the apartment of twentysomething designer, Michael Bargo, for the Domino issue on style at every age. His whole apartment was totally gorgeous – and featured black doors!

Here are a few more examples of totally cool black doors and entries.

Soft Touch

Its a soft, gray, rainy day here in Charlotte today. I was planning on putting these pics but the soft, muted colors seem especially appropriate given the melancholy Springs weather.

Here is a serving of rain washed colors for this not so sunny spring day:
