Please Stand By

There will be a slight break in our regularly scheduled programming. I Just got hit with a whammy and Now find myself back home in Seattle, WA. I’m going to try really hard to keep up with my posting in the next week or two but… I don’t want to make promises.

I hope this new year finds you doing well and setting the stage for a great year for yourself. I’ll have a totally inspiring room tomorrow. Until then…

Shame

image

I found this picture of an abused looking poster for director Steve McQueen‘s new film, Shame, while surfing Tumblr. As I’m a Michael Fassbender fan, I’m anxious to see this controversial film about a sex addict whose life spins out of control because of his addiction. I have to wait until January to see it here as that’s when it hits the art house in Charlotte. That’s OK. It gives me something to look forward to in the new year.

Speaking of which, can you believe that it’s almost 2012? Did this year slide off the plate or what? I hope you’re having a nice, lowkey Monday. See you tomorrow!

Good Stuff

I decided to take a break from my still ongoing office chair project (more on that later) to go take a gander at what the West Charlotte ReStore had on offer. There was a ton of stuff…

image

Lane writing desk and chair, $150/set @ The Charlotte Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
I love this desk! It is so lady like and petite. The finished seemed in good shape and had a beautiful looking inlay on the surface which I forgot to get a shot of. This would make a nice addition to a master or guest bedroom for someone needing a work surface that doesnttake up too much space.

image

Curved sofa, $125 and mid-century upholstered chair, $75.
This curved sofa would look good as a tight back, single cushion sofa with a wide variety of fabrics. The mid century needs some low textural sheen and to lose the skirt. It has gorgeous legs.

image

Cushion paneled entertainment armoire hutch, $75 and mid century dresser, $350.
The piece on the left is actually the top of an armoire that is missing it’s bottom. Still it could stand as a complete cabinet on its own. I think some nice furniture legs screwed to the bottom and a few interior shelves could yield a unique bar area. The cushion style panelling is a neat and different touch. I’d lacquer it some totally outrageous color… or silver leaf it. Next to it is a mid century dresser. The tag said “Rway”… I’m not an aficionado so I’m not sure what that means. But the dresser has twelve (!) drawers, he top middle drawer has three compartments. It’d make an awesome buffet.

China hutch, $275.

Last but not least, a classic armoire. Pretty, with nice lines. Bold paint and wallpaper would be nice on this piece.

Sorry about the long wait for today’s post. I planned to publish it much earlier but life and work intervened. I hope your Wednesday was grand and not too Mondayish (mine was). Catch you tomorrow! 🙂

Thrift Store Score…

For you! These are pieces I saw today while out on my travels today (forgive me for not pricing everything):

image

Rattan Sofa @ Value Village on Freedom Drive

I could see this painted and the cushions recovered with one of Trina Turk’s outdoor fabrics. How fun would that be?

image

Wicker Dining Set, $175 @ Habitat for Humanity ReStore on Wilkinson Blvd.

This set needs some small repairs but would be lovely with the metal, chair backs, and table base painted a crisp black and the seats cover with a nubby wool bouclé. Texture, texture, texture all the way!

image

Faux Bamboo Dining Set, $150 @ Habitat for Humanity ReStore on Wilkinson Blvd.

I think this table would be good in a dark gray, the chairs painted a creamy white and the seats covered with navy linen. It would also look great in a green with a pale blue and dark green print on the seats.

The possibilities are pretty endless with all three pieces! Happy hunting, everyone!

Around Charlotte: The Sleepy Poet

OK. I know this place is not some unknown hole in the wall that no one has ever heard of. It’s actually a really well known and huge (50,000 sqft.) antiques mall on South Blvd with a gigantic array of vintage and antique wares available. I had heard of it before but I’d never visited until today.

It was a quick trip with my friend Dawn before we had to go to work. As soon as we walked in the door we knew that this was not a place you spent half an hour browsing. You need to devote at least a few hours if not a whole day. But we took a quick spin around the place. Here’s some of what I saw:

image

Cool and comfortable lounge chairs with a leopard print cushion. The cushion is removable so it would be easy to paint and reupholster them.

image

A vintage, black Asian style desk. Great silhouette, right?

And last but not least in the back corner, on aisle 12, I ran into John and Amy Cline. They had the cutest setup there with a range of finds that tended toward the aged, industrial, Parisian look. They were an absolutely amiable couple who took the time to chat with me about furniture hunting, interiors, design blogs and their general obsession with all things decor related. I totally enjoyed my time with them!

This is my favorite piece from their booth: a vintage bar cart in pristine condition.

A tarnished tea set.

So do you have a favorite antiques or vintage shop? I’d love to hear about them. Hope you all are having an awesome decor filled Thursday!

I was riding around town a few weeks ago on my way to the Arboretum mall when I saw a shop called Interiors Marketplace on the corner of an intersection not too far past the community college. It looked intriguing but I didn’t have time to stop. Later when I got home I looked them up online and found their website.

While I was there I discovered that IM had a sister store called Post & Gray… the picture of the front of the building, with its pretty gray paint, white logo, and citron yellow doors grabbed my attention! After looking through the gallery of currently available product I decided that I’d visit Post & Gray the very next weekend.

My mom and I made our way to the shop on a sunny but crisp Saturday afternoon. When we walked up the stairs the garage style door to the right of the stairs was open, letting the ample sunlight flood the front of the shop.

The space is large but not cavernous and filled with beautiful new, antique, and vintage furniture and home decor. As mom and I made a circuit around the store we saw folding screens, bath linens, gorgeous French Country style armchairs, oversized lamps and chandeliers, decorative objects, and beautiful fabrics. In every nook there was an interesting or beautiful piece to discover and coo over. Needless to say, by the time we completed our trip around the store we were bubbling with excitement about all that we’d seen!

If you live in the Charlotte area or will be visiting soon, I highly recommend you check out Post & Gray’s constantly evolving selection of furniture and home decor items. You wont be disappointed!

An absolutely stunning China cabinet with filigree glass doors (my favorite piece in the store!)

Ooh, sparklies! Or how a parking garage makes me happy…

image

The above picture highlights one of my favorite sights, so far, in Charlotte. It is the back exterior wall of a parking garage in Uptown. Whenever I see the little, silver, highly polished tabs that are gently moving there, the way they sparkle in the light… it makes me smile.

A pretty parking garage. Who knew?

Today when my mom asked me where I wanted to eat  I said, “Chipotle!”, without blinking. Only when we got to Chipotle there was not an empty seat in the house. We were in the South End neighborhood and my mom suggested the Cluck-n-Cup (yes, that’s really the name). Turns out my mom had never eaten there either. So, we both ordered the chicken pot pie, at the suggestion of the counter man (super nice, chatted me up about my Duran Duran hat), along with the side (fruit, chips, salad, or mac and cheese) and drink (tea or soft drink) that comes with it.

Wow!

Best. Pot. Pie. EVAH! And believe me, I’ve tried many, many pot pies. So good! If you live in or visit Charlotte you must go have one. My mom and I will be going back again. Oh, and they also sell the pies for you to take home and bake yourself. Plus!
